The June 2026 AI dev-tool power rankings landed with five new models and a fresh crop of CLI agents. One number cuts through the noise: in blind code reviews, engineers preferred Claude Code's output 67% of the time and Codex's 25%. Same task, no labels — a near 3-to-1 quality gap.
That gap is invisible if you shop by popularity. OpenCode took the #1 tool slot on raw reach — 160K+ GitHub stars and 7.5M monthly active users — while benchmarking 78% slower than Claude Code. Stars and MAU measure mindshare. They say nothing about how the diff holds up under review.
The pricing story is just as noisy. Opus 4.7 holds the top model spot at $5/$25 per million tokens; Qwen 3.7 Max undercuts it at $2.50/$7.50 and posts a competitive 1541 WebDev Arena Elo. Cheaper tokens are real. But token price isn't cost — a fast, cheap agent that loses three of four blind reviews bills you back in rework and review time.
This is the trap teams walk into in 2026: pick the tool with the biggest number on its README, wire it into production, and discover the quality delta in code review instead of in the eval. The agent you ship on should be chosen the way you'd hire — by the work it produces, measured against your stack, before it touches main.
Tool selection is an engineering decision, not a popularity contest.
